With its high carbon emissions and vulnerability to climate change impacts, the ASEAN region urgently needs to move to a more sustainable energy model. The estimated investment required is $29.4 trillion, or 1.5%-2.7% of GDP annually until 2050.

Our new report, published in collaboration with EMIS, looks at the challenges and opportunities as the region transitions to sustainable energy.

Despite the economic, financial, and social obstacles on its journey to net zero, there has already been a surge in renewable energy projects in ASEAN. The region has seen a growing emphasis on solar and wind power in the capacity mix, to add to its ongoing exploitation of its vast water resources for hydroelectricity. But further investment is required in electrification, battery storage, and hydrogen if ASEAN’s clean energy vision is to become a reality.
